Re: LGM-Hackfest Write-Up

Hi Jabier,

cool - I've only yesterday had to answer someone that SVGs are
rasterized when included via <img> tag, and that that's just how it is
currently.

People will be happy to know that this will work better soon!

Anyway, I hope you had some fun, too, and learnt a lot of new things and
met a lot of interesting people while you were there :) It's not all
about the code.

Thanks for travelling there to make Inkscape better!

Re: LGM-Hackfest Write-Up

Jabier Arraiza
Hi Maren!

You are ok, I meet interesting people in LGM and I'm happy with it.
Is a great oportunity to grow myself. (4Kg up;)

Also I say currently you can't do a link of svg files you only can
editing the SVG outside Inkscape or throught XMLInspector.

The work we done finally view more light tonight, here are a preview:
https://inkscape.org/en/~jabiertxof/%E2%98%85image-of-svg-inside-a-svg-
at-300dpi

Thanks to xaviju for the idea, Tavmjong, Mc and specialy Ede_123 who
give me a 5 min way to do the work I spend a lot of hours.

Now going to continue the work, anyway a SVG inside a image tag are
rendered as bitmap image but you can set in preferences the DPI you
want to it.

Web browsers link it as SVG and not sure jet how work PDF and others
exporters.

Thanks for the feedback!

J.

- Thanks for the link :) Now I get it. It's already a huge improvement
to be able to indicate the dpi for linked svgs (people have been linking
them via XML editor - it's usually the technical people who need this
feature, so they figured out how to do it without GUI :) ).

Re: LGM-Hackfest Write-Up

Jabier Arraiza
In reply to this post by Maren Hachmann
Hi all.

In the SVG import process there is a new dialog with some strings,
Anyone want to help me to improve/fix?

Screenshot: https://inkscape.org/en/~jabiertxof/%E2%98%85dialog-for-import-svg
String 1: "Select how to import your SVG"
String 2: "How you want the SVG become imported?"
String 3: "The SVG is incrusted inside document, you could edit it"
String 4: "The SVG is linked from outside document as a image, you can edit only original file"

Thanks in advance, Jabier.

Re: LGM-Hackfest Write-Up

Maren Hachmann
Hi Jabier,

could this be a bit more like the PNG import dialog, with dpi value and
'don't ask again' checkbox?

Title: Import SVG image
String 2: (not needed)
String 3: 🔘 include SVG image as editable object(s) in the current file
String 4: ○ only add a link to the SVG file (not editable in this document)

And then, if applicable and correct (I'm not entirely happy with the
wording, either, but this could be a start):
String 5 (visible when String 4 is checked): Resolution (for export and
in Inkscape): [96] dpi
String 6: tooltip for string 5: Linked SVG images are included as their
raster representation. The dpi value is for the linked SVG. Resizing the
image in Inkscape will not increase the number of pixels. The resolution
can be changed later by [...].

String 7: Don't ask again

Hi Maren, reply inline:

This is not posible, DPI need to be a global preference so if I change
in the import dialog may be changed when this value changed in
preferences and reopen.

About 'dont ask again' is realy only to select between insert or link
and the same users may want one or other in anytime, so is not good not
ask.

Not necesary?

The only way to handle DPI per image is create a new attribute like
"inkscape:svg-dpi" in namedview but this overload the code and complex
it, when I think every body want a 300 or up fixed DPI.

Maybe is better put in the import dialog a note the user can change the
DPI inside preferences.

Regards, Jabier.

- Ah, thanks for the explanation.

- I disagree. I *never* need to link to an SVG file, and would like to
save that click on import.

It's not a huge thing, that additional box - and it could almost just be
copied over from that other dialog (plus the preferences option -
although maybe it would make sense to summarize all those 'don't ask
again' things into one option? I've seen other programs do this.).

Couldn't you please add it?
